Responsible action and philanthropy are almost part of Lombard Odier's DNA: the founding of the Geneva-based private bank in 1796 is closely linked to the history of the humanitarian movement, in particular Henri Dunant. The founder of the International Commitee of the Red Cross was as well acquainted with the bank's partners at the time.

Dunant's commitment to the victims of war and conflict and his role in foundig the Red Cross impressed Lombard Odier. The financial insitution supportet Dunant from the very beginning. «It became clear early on that the financial commitment to the International Red Cross went beyond usual scope,» says Maximilian Martin, Head of Philanthropy at Lombard Odier.

Foundation: Focus on Education and Humanitarian Aid

Lombard Odier has long focused not only on managing assets but also on making a positive contribution to society. This commitment culminated in the establishment of the Fondation Lombard Odier in 2004.

The foundation primarily finances project in the areas of education and humanitarian aid. «Our aim is to work with donation recipients where we can achieve a concrete impact because we want to offer more than just a monetary donation,» says Martin.

Support for Those in Need

Since 2011, Fondation Lombard Odier has collaborated with the ICRC to enhance its capacity to address challenges and strengthen partnerships with the private sector.

In 2017, the ICRC launched the world's first «Humanitarian Impact Bond» with Lombard Odier as co-sponsor and incubation partner. This is a financial project that opens up new, highly efficient opportunities for physical rehabilitation. Thanks to the project, over 3,000 people with disabilities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Mali and Nigeria have already revieved physical rehabilitation services.

Lombard Odier also supports private individuals, families and foundations in strategically deploying their assets for sustainable and charitable purposes. «Philanthropy brings out the best in people and families,» says Martin.
