Klarna Makes New Attempt at IPO
According to media reports, Klarna intends to go public in the U.S. in September. The company is said to be targeting a valuation between 13 and 14 billion dollar, Reuters reported, citing sources.
The company suspended its IPO plans in April after sweeping tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump shook global markets.
The shares offered as part of the IPO could already be priced this week between 34 and 36 dollar, the sources added. According to them, Klarna aims to raise nearly 1 billion dollar through the listing.
There had already been IPO ambitions back in 2021 for the firm, which rose to prominence with its «buy now, pay later» services. At that time, a valuation of almost 50 billion dollar was envisioned.
The company declined to comment to Reuters.
Improved IPO environment
The brighter mood on the stock markets in recent months now makes the environment for IPOs look much more favorable. Particularly in the U.S., there have recently been a series of listings. These included design software maker Figma and stablecoin giant Circle. Their shares at times gained significantly, rising from their issue prices to highs of 333 percent and 864 percent, respectively.
According to Reuters calculations, the 20 largest U.S. IPOs this year posted an average increase of 36 percent on their first day of trading.
Klarna on growth path – but with losses
In the second quarter, Klarna increased revenue by 20 percent year-on-year on a comparable basis to 823 million dollar. Adjusted operating profit rose by 1 million dollar to 29 million dollar. The number of active customers grew by 31 percent to 111 million. However, the bottom line showed a net loss of 53 million dollar – nearly three times as high as in the second quarter of 2024.
