PostFinance Announces Job Cuts

According to a statement released on Thursday, PostFinance intends to cut 141 jobs, primarily affecting administrative roles in Bern. In addition, up to 73 contractual adjustments are planned.

Compared to a total workforce of approximately 3'900 employees (as of the end of 2024), this corresponds to a reduction of 3,6 percent.

Consultation Procedure Due to Restructuring

The restructuring requires a consultation process, during which affected employees will have the opportunity to submit proposals on how dismissals can be avoided, limited in number, or mitigated in impact. A final decision by the management board is expected in July.

Strategy 2025–2028

The Swiss Post subsidiary refers to the restructuring in the context of its Strategy 2025–2028. The goal is to achieve moderate growth, increase market impact, and enhance performance. This means generating additional income, strengthening non-interest income, boosting sales performance, and overall improving efficiency.

The job cuts are a result of changes in the organizational model due to the planned restructuring. The institute points to synergies and the reallocation of resources toward key strategic areas.

«We are aware that this announcement will be burdensome for many of our employees and may cause uncertainty and concern,» said CEO Beat Röthlisberger in the statement. «We will support them closely during this period.»

A Bit of Comfort from the Federal Office of Communications

At least there was also some good news on Thursday. The Federal Office of Communications (BAKOM) reported in its annual review that Swiss Post met all requirements in the area of basic service provision. The statutory minimum level for access to cash payment services was exceeded. More than 90 percent of the population can access such services within 20 minutes (on foot or by public transport).

Especially relevant for PostFinance: According to BAKOM, private customers remain satisfied with its services, scoring 81 out of 100 points, the same as last year. Business customers were even slightly more satisfied than in 2023, scoring 77 points.
