Gert De Winter died overnight on Thursday at the age of 59. Baloise spokesperson Roberto Brunazzi confirmed the news to «cash.ch».

«We express our deep sorrow over the passing of Gert De Winter. Our thoughts are with his family,» the spokesperson said. De Winter is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Nearly Two Decades at Baloise

De Winter publicly disclosed his cancer diagnosis in early 2022 and underwent several months of medical treatment. By August 2022, he had resumed full operational leadership of the insurer. In early July 2023, he resigned from his role and returned to his native Belgium, where he has now passed away.

In total, Gert De Winter worked at Baloise for 18 years. He served as CEO from 2016 to 2023, and from 2009 to 2015, he led Baloise Insurance. Prior to joining Baloise, De Winter worked for consulting firm Accenture in Brussels from 1988 to 2004.
