Hotel Launches Longevity Program for Canines

«A dog gives us so much – love, loyalty, joy of life. It is time to give something back,» says Elisabeth Gürtler, the grande dame of Austrian hospitality. Her personal love of dogs – especially her Jack Russell terrier, Ella – was the motivation to create an environment at the Alpin Resort Sacher that offers wellness, prevention, and joy of life for four-legged friends as well.

The Grande Dame of Austrian Hospitality

Elisabeth Gürtler, born in 1950, managed the Hotel Sacher in Vienna for many years, organized the Vienna Opera Ball, and served as managing director of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. In her second marriage, she was wed to the Austrian-Swiss actor Helmut Lohner. In Austria, she is considered a well-connected and highly business-savvy woman.

At the resort, guests can participate with their dogs in fireside talks with veterinarians – on topics such as aging prevention for dogs, dental health, and parasites. On request, artist Mari Otberg will even create a portrait of the dog.

What the Experts Say

According to Nils Behrens, Chief Brand Officer of Sunday Natural and an expert in holistic medicine, prevention, and regeneration, many longevity principles can indeed be applied to dogs: «Studies show that species-appropriate, protein- and nutrient-rich nutrition, special supplements, regular physical activity, and mental stimulation can extend a dog’s healthy lifespan.

In addition, preventive veterinary medicine plays a crucial role: regular health checks, dental prophylaxis, and the early detection of inflammation or metabolic changes can significantly reduce the risk of chronic disease.»

Dog trainers Bernadette Kälin and Beat Eichenberger from the Wolfsrudel dog school in Hünenberg take a more critical view: «Longevity programs often consist of well-known elements in new packaging, primarily serving the purpose of experience,» they say. The most effective measures for a long and healthy dog’s life have long been established: balanced nutrition, regular exercise, targeted training, mental stimulation, preventive medical care, and a stable social environment.

However, they view it positively when dogs are allowed to stay by their owners’ side during holidays:
«This increases their well-being and can indirectly have life-extending effects. Moreover, the presence of a dog has demonstrably positive effects on the health and well-being of humans as well.»
