What do you do first in the morning?

On a weekday - take a shower. At the weekend - cuddle up in bed with my children.

What is the best thing about your job?

Sharing dreams with other people and working together to make them come true.

A moment that changed your life?

When I was 18, the then director of the Zurich Ballet visited the Royal Ballet School for auditions. I plucked up the courage to approach him and asked if I could show him my own choreography, which I then performed. He then offered me a contract.

What cars do you own? Which is your favorite?

Our electric family cargo bike - the ‘Tern Quick Long Haul’, which fits two children or one adult and a large suitcase. I know this because when I travel, my husband takes me to our local train station on it!

What advice would you give your 20-year-old self?

Be curious, brave, resilient and patient.... don't worry if things take time - but enjoy every moment on the journey.

What are you particularly proud of?

My children.

What has been your biggest defeat?

Not being able to be in more than one place at a time!

What is your favorite wine?

The one I can drink in good company.

Are you currently working on a project?

I'm looking forward to presenting my ballet “Mrs. Robinson” as my next project at Ballett Zürich soon. It's my interpretation of the classic book/movie «The Graduate» and, like the movie, has moments that make me laugh out loud and then surprises me again with real emotional complexity. I can't wait to immerse myself in the piece with my wonderful dancers here in Zurich!

What is most important to you at the moment?

Nurturing, inspiring and bringing joy to the people I am responsible for - my family and in the company.

What would be the biggest surprise for someone who had to do your job for a day?

There is always something unpredictable when you work with artists and want to bring productions to the stage together.

What is your personal drive?

Collaboration and the ability of dance and music to overcome emotions

What are you afraid of?

That my loved ones or my ability to create will be taken away from me.

Your favorite watch brand?

I've never worn a watch until now, but as I get older I like the idea of having a gentle reminder of the passing of time close to me. Maybe I should actually start wearing one.

What do your employees value most about you?

I think they appreciate my passion and commitment to our work together and that I always ask them to contribute creatively to our work together - valuing their ideas and their voices as much as their physical abilities. I am always approachable, calm and considered in my leadership and try to always be “human” in my interactions.

Your best investment?

The time and dedication I have invested in my loved ones and my own creativity, career and health.

Cathy Marston has been Ballet Director and Chief Choreographer of Ballet Opernhaus Zürich since the 2023/24 season. Born in the UK and raised in Switzerland, she has performed with numerous companies and institutions worldwide. She completed her dance training in Cambridge and at the Royal Ballet School in London.
